Since its inception in 1974, the International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves (IRMMW-THz) has served as the longest-standing and most influential forum in the field of ultra-high frequency science. Now entering its 50th year, the 2025 edition will take place from 17–22 August in Espoo, Finland, hosted by Aalto University.
A Foundational Forum for Terahertz Science
IRMMW-THz has played a defining role in the evolution of terahertz (THz) research. Originally two separate events—one focused on infrared and millimeter waves, the other on THz electronics—the conferences merged in 2004 and have since operated under a unified name. In 2009, the series formally became part of a non-profit science society, later granted 501(c)(3) status in the United States in 2016.
The conference and its affiliated publications, including the Journal of Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves and the IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology, have been primary platforms for showcasing advancements in THz detectors, components, and applications since the 1970s.
A Cross-Disciplinary, International Community
The scope of the conference is broad, reflecting the vast potential of THz technology.
Key topic areas typically include:
- Imaging and spectroscopy in biology and medicine
- Astronomical and atmospheric instrumentation
- Security and defence technologies
- Plasma diagnostics, free electron lasers, and synchrotron applications
- Industrial sensing, telecommunications, and ultrafast electronics
- Fundamental studies in chemistry, physics, and material properties
The conference alternates between venues in North America, Europe, and Asia, and has hosted thousands of scientists from over 30 countries. Notably, the 2019 conference in Paris welcomed more than 1,000 participants. Even during the pandemic, attendance at virtual events in 2020 and 2021 exceeded 1,100.
Looking Ahead to Espoo 2025
The upcoming 50th conference in Finland will continue this legacy of international collaboration. With participation from institutions such as Aalto University and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the event is expected to attract wide cross-disciplinary engagement from academia, national labs, and industry.
Key dates include:
- Abstract Submission Deadline: 28 March 2025
- Author Notification: 16 May 2025
- Final Paper Deadline: 30 June 2025
- Conference Dates: 17–22 August 2025
